  Strawberry Point Buried Ashbury cemetery.
Age 38. Residence Strawberry Point. Enlisted Aug. 15, 1862. Mustered Aug. 22, 1862. Transferred to the Navy as a Seaman, by general order No. 182, July 1, 1864 at New Orleans, served aboard the sloop-of-war USS Portsmouth, launched 1843, operated as station ship at New Orleans. Naval enlistment expired October 13, 1865. ~contributed by Eric D. Starnes, who also adds these notes: "In the rosters I have seen Ripley A. Hale & Samuel H. Knickerbocker listed as going into the Marine Brigade. The four other members of the 21st that are listed as transferred to the Mississippi Marine Brigade were, but Hale & Knickerbocker actually transferred into the US Navy. In Gilbert Cooley's letters he says that they were aboard the USS Chickasaw during the Battle of Mobile Bay, but I think this is in error."
